Becoming A Personal Assistant
If becoming a personal assistant sounds like the perfect career for you, try these five easy steps. Step one is to review your current job history, education and skills. See what your strengths and weaknesses are and what you are qualified to do. While there are no degrees when it comes to being a personal assistant certain skills are helpful. Write the best resume that you can and write a cover letter that outlines in detail the skills and abilities you feel qualify you as a personal assistant and even a little something about your personality.
Step two is to decide what kind of assistant you want to be. There are celebrity assistants, executive assistants, household assistants and more. Check the job listings in the local paper or go online to see what the demand is. If you are someone who can keep their cool around the rich and famous then a celebrity assistant job might be right for you. If you are great with administrative duties then you may want to work for an executive. If you enjoy managing households a job with a busy family might be right for you.
Step three is to register with an agency that places assistants in jobs. While some employers hire privately, many do go through these agencies because they trust them. The agency does things like drug screening, background checks and criminal checks. They also review the applicant's skills to determine what they are qualified for. They can help you find temporary and permanent jobs based on your profile. Step four of the process is to work with the agency and schedule your first interviews.
The interview process is step five. When becoming a personal assistant you will not only need to interview with the placement agency but also your prospective employer. When interviewing with an employer always present a professional and polished appearance. Dress to impress and exude confidence. Be polite, shake hands and make eye contact. Let the interviewer speak first and do your best to answer the questions they ask you. All that's left is to wait for a job offer and decide if you want to accept it or not. You might want to start off with temporary positions to build your resume then search for a higher paying permanent job once you have experience under your belt.
